Grampian Area Management Team

Investing in leadership and management development

Investing in leadership and management development

About our team

We are the team responsible for the operational management of both emergency and patient transport ambulance services across the Grampian region of Scottish Ambulance Service. We are a small team in numbers (6 members) but we are responsible for a vast geographical area and a large number of ambulance staff.

iMatter 2021 – our action

Our iMatter report in 2021 was predominantly green in relation to individual and team experience. One of the areas identified for improvement was ensuring appropriate training and development was in place for all Area Service Managers, including those who were new into their posts as well as those who were well established in their roles.

Once agreed, the team members have taken ownership of the action and engaged with the regional Organisational Development Lead who then assisted with establishing bi-monthly leadership development sessions for the team as well as making individual career coaching session available to any interested team members. The development sessions focused on using motivational strategies and building key relationships skills for leading and influencing teams and individuals.

The impact of the agreed improvement action reached beyond the immediate team, as similar development sessions were subsequently offered to Clinical Team Leaders and mangers in the structure below, to help them develop skills for leading their own teams. In addition to the OD Lead delivering tailored sessions at a region level, he also supported Grampian-based Clinical Team Leaders with the enrolment onto the organisation-wide Foundation Leadership and Management Programme (FLMP), which was launched in April 2022.

Since the team’s iMatter action plan has been agreed in November 2021, 4 leadership development session were held with the team and 4 team members have accessed individual career coaching. Further 7 regional development sessions held with other Clinical Team Leaders reporting into the team members, while 18 team leaders were enrolled onto the FLMP.
